CANACONA: Canacona’s Joyce De Souza a lawyer from Goa, is elected as the CLP Women Officer of United Kingdom’s (UK) Labour Party of Brent West Zone in London on Thursday.
According to sources in the UK, Joyce De Souza has been elected as the CLP Women Officer for Brent West Parliamentary Constituency of the Labour Party (CLP) on Thursday (23rd November 2023). Brent West Constituency is part of the Borough of Brent.She is believed to be the first women from the Goan Catholic Community ever to be elected as CLP Women Officer in the Borough of Brent, London.
She has been elected within one year of joining the Labour Party. She was a practising lawyer in Canacona,Goa and used to organise Court programmes creating legal awareness.She was a lawyer/legal aid speaker for various programmes including women related issues like dowry, Save Girl Child, Female Infanticide, Divorce, Alimony, Rape, Sexual Assault at Work- Places, Domestic Abuse, Etc. As an elected CLP Women Officer, she will be liaising with the local police officers with issues relating to women like domestic Violence, Misogyny, Homophobia, etc. She will also take the responsibility of creating awareness among women of the help available to them and the various ways of approaches they could take to resolve their issues. She will also organise programmes to engage women with different backgrounds and diverse communities with the help of the CLP Brent West.
Incidentally, Joyce De Souza is the wife of Elvis Fernandes, Ex-Congress Block President of Canacona Constituency who migrated to the UK now about 5 years ago, is also active in social work and also reaches out to different communities including their own Goan community in London. In Goa too, both husband-Wife combinations were in social work . Interestingly, Fernandes was elected as a delegate of the CLP Brent West on the same day.
When contacted over phone, Joyce said, ‘Canacona and the people of Canacona and Goa shall always be close to my heart’.
