PANAJI: Governor P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant extended warm greetings to the people of Goa on the historic occasion of Goa Revolution Day, observed as ‘Kranti Din’.
In his message, Governor P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju said June 18 holds a special place in Goa’s freedom struggle as it marked a defining moment in the fight against Portuguese rule.
Recalling the events of 1946, the Governor said the presence of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia at Lohia Maidan, Margao, gave a new direction and momentum to the movement for Goa’s freedom.
He said the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on Goa’s journey after Liberation and the progress achieved in areas such as education, culture, tourism and economic development while preserving the State’s unique identity.
The Governor paid tribute to the martyrs, freedom fighters and leaders whose sacrifices paved the way for Goa’s Liberation, and urged citizens to reaffirm their commitment towards peace, harmony and inclusive development.
Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant also extended greetings and said Goa Revolution Day has immense significance for Goans as it was on June 18, 1946, that people openly challenged the oppressive Portuguese regime at Margao.
He recalled that Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia along with Dr. Julião Menezes inspired Goans through a fearless speech that encouraged people to intensify the freedom movement.
Dr. Sawant said the spark of resistance from Margao became a major milestone in the struggle that eventually culminated in Goa’s Liberation on December 19, 1961.
The Chief Minister paid homage to the freedom fighters who endured hardships and sacrifices for Goa’s freedom and called upon citizens to protect the values of freedom, peace and progress.
