Panaji: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee paid tributes to the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Office in Panaji on Thursday at an event to mark his 57th death anniversary.
In attendance at the event were GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Ponda Congress leader Rajesh Verekar, Spokesperson Tulio D’Souza, General Secretary Adv Yatish Naik, General Secretary Vijai Pai, Panjim Congress leader Menino D’Cruz, Secretary Everson Vales and other Congress members.
The programme was hosted by Vijai Pai. All members offered garlands to Nehru’s portrait.
Referring to the ongoing turmoil and horrors which unravel everyday under the BJP government at Central & State, GPCC President Girish Chodankar quoted Nehru and said, “There is nothing more horrifying than stupidity in action.” His words are hard reality today, looking at the suffering of people first due to economic mismanagement, demonetisation disaster and now Covid mishandling.
Chodankar asserted that Nehru always strove to preserve the independent identity of Goa since 1947. “Congress leaders from Maharashtra wanted to amalgamate Goa into their state but Nehru stood by Goa’s wish to remain an independent territory by maintaining its identity.”
“Today, even after 57 years since the death of Nehru, BJP and RSS are trying to kill him and his legacy through false propaganda and repeated rumour mongering. But the ideas of Nehru are immortal and will live forever,” concluded Chodankar.
GPCC General Secretary Adv Yatish Naik pointed out that the institutions created by Nehru stand tall even to this date. “The politicians belonging to the current government are endeavouring to destroy these institutions,” he added.
“Pt Nehru’s life is a message to all of us. If he wanted, he could have lived a life of luxury. But he chose the life of sacrifice and worked as a freedom fighter and then as India’s true servant till his drying breath. His ideological depth will always guide humanity,” Naik said.
The event concluded with the presentation of a vote of thanks by GPCC Secretary Everson Vales.
