PANAJI: The Goa Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott and other traditional fishermen’s bodies questioned the use of a fishing ban when the LED fishing and bull trawling continue unabated.
The GRE says the fishing ban is not meant for canoes that have Court permission to fish throughout the year; it demands the fisheries department implement a fishing ban for three months and also acts on trawlers arriving from other states to fish in Goan waters.
“What is the use of a ban when there is illegal LED fishing despite the law banning it?” asked GRE.
Meanwhile, the GRE warned the government against any plans to come up with a Marina project under the Sagarmala initiative, saying they can set it up at any of the berths inside the Mormugao Port.
Fishermen say they will oppose Marina tooth and nail in case it comes to Sancoale Bay or any other site which can affect traditional fishermen
