ANJUNA: A Halloween party advertisement by a club in Ozrant, Anjuna, has sparked objections over its depiction of a Catholic nun, prompting the establishment to remove the promotional material and apologise for the offence caused.
The controversy arose after Club Salud publicised a three-day Halloween event scheduled from October 30 to November 1. The promotional artwork featured a nun alongside a cross, prompting criticism from sections of the local community over the use of religious imagery to market an entertainment event.
Residents expressed concern that the depiction was disrespectful towards the Catholic faith and the religious significance associated with the vocation of nuns. Jawish Moniz of Vagator and Roysal D’Souza of Anjuna were among those who raised objections to the campaign.
The matter also reached the police, with Assagao-based activist Desmond Alvares filing a complaint with the Anjuna police and other authorities. He sought action against the club owner and others allegedly connected with the creation and circulation of the advertisement.
The complaint questioned the use of the nun’s attire and the cross in the Halloween promotion, arguing that such imagery could hurt religious sentiments.
Responding to the criticism, Club Salud took down the disputed post from its social media platforms and issued an apology. The club said it had no intention of offending any religious or cultural community and expressed regret over the controversy.
It also reiterated its respect for all faiths and beliefs.
Alvares, however, maintained his complaint and called for action in the matter, leaving the issue open for further consideration by the authorities.
