PANAJI: DRAG has demanded immediate shifting of the venue of the workshop on Good Governance to a venue accessible for persons with disability and the elderly.
DRAG also said that failing which they will be forced to protest outside the venue on the day of the programme and file a criminal case against the concerned officers under Section 92 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016 for disrespect and insult to persons with disability.
Disability Rights Association of Goa is disabled peoples organization started 21 years ago with the main objective of bringing people with disability into the mainstream society.
“We have received information that your office is organising a workshop on Good Government as part of the Government’s Good Governance week on 23rd December 2024 morning at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall Panjim,” said DRAG President Avelino D’sa
He further said that you are well aware that the Institute Menezes Braganza hall is not accessible for persons with disability and the elderly and is in violation of Sections 3 and 40 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016.
“You are also aware that we have been fighting to make the Institute Menezes Braganza accessible for persons with disability for the last 10 years and a case is pending against Directorate of Art and Culture in the court of the State Disability Commissioner. You are also aware the 8% of Goa’s population comprises of persons with disability and the elderly,” he added
D’sa said that they were shocked to note that your office is organising a workshop on Good Governance in an inaccessible venue when it is well aware of the above.
“This amounts to disrespect and insult to persons with disability which is a criminal offense under Section 92 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016,” he added
