PANAJI: WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar said that the rise is more due to south west monsoon winds, which increase the wave amplitude and lead to sea surge, which in turn leads to sand erosion, which normally beach/sand restores after monsoon.
“The water levels in the sea marginally rises during monsoon, due to high out flow from the rivers. The rise is more due to south west monsoon winds, which increase the wave amplitude and lead to sea surge. Which in turn leads to sand erosion, which normally beach/sand restores after monsoon,” said Shirodkar.
He further said that as far as Baina beach is concerned, sand erosion was reported in the year 2014, there after the same beach is under observation by the department. In recent years no erosions are reported.
“Anti-erosion measures are taken up only after observing the behavior of the sea for a long length of time (4 years) as normally beach regains its lost stretch in most of the cases,” he added.
Minister informed that the type of measures implemented are decided based on the severity of the problem, sea face, wave, location, foundation etc.
“Baina beach had shown severe erosion in the year 2013-14 where in some hutments on the beach were affected. Thereafter there are no reports of severe erosion and the said beach has not been identified as eroding beach, and hence department has not prioritized the project,” he added.
