PANAJI: A growing initiative to tackle hunger and reduce food wastage in Goa received a major boost as Street Providence Goa, in association with Food Bank for the Poor, felicitated industries, organisations and individuals for their contribution to food recovery and distribution across the state.
At its second award function, the organisation recognised companies that regularly donate surplus, hygienic and nutritious food from their factory canteens instead of allowing it to go to waste. The recovered food is distributed to slum communities, shelter homes, orphanages and other vulnerable groups.
Addressing the gathering, Factories and Boilers Minister Nilkant Halarnkar commended the participating industries for supporting the initiative. He said such efforts not only reduce food wastage but also ensure that nutritious meals reach underprivileged families across Goa.
Among the companies honoured were Lupin, Siemens, Cipla, Colgate-Palmolive, IFB Industries, Marksans Pharma, Micro Labs and CommScope for their consistent contribution to the programme.
Organisers said the initiative highlights the power of collaboration between industries, non-governmental organisations and volunteers in building an effective food recovery network. Through coordinated efforts, thousands of meals that would otherwise have been discarded are now reaching people facing food insecurity.
They reiterated that the initiative is driven by the belief that no food should go to waste when people are going hungry and appealed to more industries and commercial establishments to join the movement by donating surplus food, helping expand the programme’s reach across the state.
