QUEPEM: The first District Road Safety Committee meeting of Kushavati district has flagged a road accident black spot in Quepem taluka and discussed measures to curb unsafe driving, noise pollution and tourists driving vehicles on beaches.
The meeting, chaired by Kushavati District Collector and District Magistrate Gurudas S. T. Desai at the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex in Margao, stressed the need for coordinated action by departments to improve road safety and strengthen enforcement of traffic regulations.
The identification of an accident black spot in Quepem was among the key issues discussed, with the committee emphasising the need for appropriate corrective measures to reduce the risk of further accidents.
The committee also discussed the issue of tourists driving vehicles on beaches, calling for preventive measures and enforcement of applicable restrictions to protect public safety.
Concern was raised over vehicles fitted with unauthorised modified silencers that cause noise pollution. The committee called for appropriate action against such vehicles. It also stressed the need to ensure that roadwork sites are equipped with proper signboards, barricades and warning signals to alert motorists and prevent accidents.
Improving public awareness was another priority, with members emphasising the importance of promoting the Good Samaritan Scheme, which encourages people to help road accident victims. Awareness programmes during Road Safety Week were also discussed to promote traffic discipline and safe driving practices.
The committee further proposed creating a dedicated webpage or portal for Kushavati district to publish meeting minutes, notifications and other road safety-related information.
