SANCOALE: A 26-year-old BITS Pilani Goa PhD scholar, Arjun Sabu, was found dead at a rented flat near the campus on Wednesday, with police suspecting depression linked to a failed relationship as a possible factor behind the incident.
The post-mortem examination confirmed death due to hanging. Investigators have also ruled out any foul play in the case.
Police sources said a note recovered from the room stated that no one should be held responsible for his death. The scholar allegedly wrote, “I am very sorry for taking this decision,” expressing regret over his action.
Arjun Sabu, a native of Kerala and a second-year PhD scholar at BITS Pilani Goa campus, had been staying in Goa since January 2025. He was residing in a rented accommodation near the institute.
Preliminary investigation suggests he had been undergoing emotional distress following the end of a long-term relationship, which reportedly ended around a year ago after his partner moved abroad.
Police have completed inquest proceedings and handed over the body to the family members, who are expected to perform the final rites in Wayanad, Kerala.
Further formalities in connection with the case have been completed.
