PORVORIM: Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar today disallowed discussion on the issue of Manipur violence as raised by the Opposition MLAs.
The Opposition MLAs in State Assembly arrived dressed in black and demanded a discussion on the Manipur violence.
This demand resulted in a heated ruckus in the house. The opposition MLAs stood and shouted demanding a proper discussion on the issue of Manipur.
They also accused the BJP Government of not being serious about the issues in country while stating that Opposition is not politicizing this issue but the ruling is polarizing the Manipur violence.
Speaker Tawadkar said that the issue is very sensitive and the Union Home Ministry along with the respective State government is working to resolve the issue and that is the reason we are not allowing the resolution.
“The Union Home Ministry is dealing with the issue,” Tawadkar said. “The issue is discussed in Parliament. We cannot allow discussion on the issue on the floor of the House.”
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that Goans have already extended their support for people of Manipur.
“The opposition should not make a mockery of this issue shouldn’t politicise the issue. Hence the .Speaker should not allow this resolution,” said Sawant
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said the Supreme Court has taken serious cognisance of the violence in Manipur.
“Today it is Manipur, tomorrow it should not be Goa; the administration isn’t serious at all. Why shouldn’t we talk about Manipur? questioned Alemao.
The Speaker had banned a private members’ resolution on the Manipur issue that had been presented by an AAP MLA the previous week, according to Yuri Alemao.
Goa Assembly Speaker Tawadkar on Monday had suspended all seven Opposition MLAs for a day as they demanded a discussion over Manipur violence.
Tawadkar had initially suspended them for two days. However, he later had reduced the suspension period to 24 hours.
