CANACONA – Two families at Agonda had a miraculous escape after an overhead water tank from a nearby shack fell on the house after a whirlwind of gusty winds hit the Canacona coast late Monday night.
The sudden heavy and hissing gutsy winds late Monday night created havoc in Canacona, throwing electricity alignment in disarray, forcing the fee tourists and residents to run helter-skelter, as several incidents of uprooted trees were reported mostly in the coastal areas.
An overhead water tank of a nearby Shack was flown by the strong whirlwind that ripped through the area and fell on a residential house belonging to one Yessu Narayan Pagi at Divanbhag (Dhawalkhazan), Agonda, completely destroying the room, including a TV set. Luckily, two families staying in the house were in two adjoining rooms when the water tank fell, destroying and breaking the rafters and roof tiles.
Necessary forms are provided to the families to report the damages, informed Talathi- Rama Velip, who roughly pegged the structural damages to the tune of Rs 60,000/-, but was informed there are other valuables such as a TV, were destroyed in the incident.
Elsewhere in the taluka, Electrical alignments were virtually grounded in several parts, especially at the Palolem and neighbouring areas.
According to fire services, the lone fire services party was on foot right from the Monday night and continuously attended the calls at sites while filing this report.
Incidents of several incidents of tree-falling, besides damages to structures, have kept the lone Canacona fire tender party busy since Monday night.
The NH-66 road got blocked, but Fire Service personnel rushed to clear the several fallen trees at Barcem, and after that, two fallen trees nearby the Ganpati Gumti at Karmalghat were removed.
Electricity alignment was literarily mingled after nearly a dozen of coconut trees were either uprooted or broken in-between and fell on electricity Poles and a few houses/structures at Palolem beach Coast.
A Coconut tree fell on the house of one Ranganath NGaonkar at Palolem.
Several trees falling, including Coconut trees and others, were reported at Patnem, including on a house and a hut, while most others were on roads.
According to AE Electricity Sanjay Naik, the losses to the department alone could be more than the tune of Rs. 10 lakhs at Palolem itself.
Incidents of trees uprooting were also reported from Khotigao, as a large tree fell on the house of Pandu Kalsu Gaonkar at Kuskem.
Fire tender rushed to clear the fallen trees on an electrical and dangerously posing near the school at Galgibaga.
Branches of the mango tree and a Jackfruit tree fell behind the Devgipurush Hall at Patnem,
Houses of Kishan Komarpant, Sachin, and another house at Patnem have been damaged due to tree falls while a coconut tree fell on the road at Colomb near Oceanic hotel.
A godown of a Chandan factory at Nagorcem went up in flames which was, however, timely attended by fire services to avoid a major catastrophe and colossal damages.
