VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday morning provided tractor and fertilizer bags to all farmers in Belabai to help plough their fields.
Salkar speaking to reporters in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, ward councillor Girish Borker, Councillor Shami Salkar and a large number of traditional farmers also said that he will place request to Government to increase subsidies to farmers so as to motivate and bring back youth in farming which could generate self employment.
” I have been doing this as an annual ritual for the farmers of this area for the last 14 years and we provide them with tractors, urea, fertiliser and seeds to promote farming in this area. This is the only farm land available in Vasco city and we have to save it because these traditional farmers are growing old and we need to support them. We want to motivate the farmers and we will take the issue with the Government to provide boost and offer support becuase the children of these farmers are going away to other sources of employment due to lack of support and subsidies or incentive and there is a decline in farming activity” said Salkar
” We want that the Government encourage the children of the farmers to take up farming as a good source of self employment and give them a scope of profit making with incentives. The youth can then come back to farming at a time when the government is stressing on natural farming and Vascokars can get the benefit of this. We are also in discussion to develop adjoining area into farmlands because this was the only farm that offered chemical free vegetables to Murgao Taluka during the pandemic. ” Said Salkar
Ward councillor Girish Borker said that Salkar had offering support to farmers even when he was the councilor for last 14 years but this was the first time he had come to meet the farmers as the elected MLA of Vasco Constituency
” This time Salkar has Personally gone to Margao and offered all items that the farmers require and we have started the new campaign of developing additional farmland and we request people to immediately contact us or the MLA if they are interested in carrying out agricultural activity here so that we can extend them support from our side and also from the Government. Our aim is to help these farmers and the election manifesto of Krishna Salkar was launched at the hands of these farmers ” Said Borker
