NAVELIM: Margao Town Police have registered a case following a complaint by Maria Inez Fernandes of Navelim, Salcete, alleging that her husband, who is physically disabled and visually impaired, was cheated of approximately ₹70 lakh over a period from 2021 to 2026.
According to the complaint, Sohail Shaikh of Cuncolim, who was allegedly working as the caretaker of the complainant’s husband Caetano Fernandes, along with his brother Riyan Shaikh and another person identified as Paulino, allegedly conspired to obtain access to the victim’s financial resources.
The complainant alleged that the accused induced her husband to sign various cheques drawn on different bank accounts and also took possession of his ATM card along with the PIN. The accused allegedly used these details to withdraw a total amount of around ₹70 lakh.
The complaint further alleges that the complainant was taken to the State Bank of India branch at Navelim, where signatures were allegedly obtained on various documents. Based on these documents, a loan of ₹3 lakh was allegedly obtained against her husband’s pension, with the loan amount subsequently used for personal purposes by the accused.
Police have registered the case and further investigation is being conducted by LPSI Aanushka Parab of Margao Town Police Station.
