PANAJI: Goa government has finally notified the stringent Motor Vehicle Act prescribing hefty penalties for violation of Motor Vehicle rules.
The Act will come into force in the state from May 1, 2021.
The implementation of the central government Act was deferred since last year on account of Covid Pandemic and poor quality or road infrastructure in the state.
“As per notification it will be implemented from April 16, 2021;But govt will issue corrigendum saying it will be implemented from May 1,” said Godinho
The Act has been a bone of contention in many States, as the hefty fines which go up to Rs 25,000 have been termed as unjust. Godinho has already proposed reducing fines, a relaxation offered by the Central government.
Use of mobile while driving two Wheeler/Three Wheeler* -Rs. 1,500 for first offence , Rs. 10,000 For second or subsequent offence
Other LMV* – Rs. 3,000 for first offence , Rs. 10,000 For second or subsequent offence
Driving without safety belts* – Rs. 1,000
Failure to allow free passage to emergency vehicles like ambulance, fire service vehicle, etc* – Rs 10,000
Sounding Horn continuously and needlessly* – Rs 1,000
Motor vehicle races and trial of speed in public places – Rs 5,000
Driving at a speed exceeding the maximum speed fixed for the motor vehicle* – Rs 1,500
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 is being implemented in the country since September 1, 2019. This new act has increased the fine for many offences to check road accidents and improve the road safety in the country.
