PANAJI: The Central Government has notified the Digital Forensics Laboratory at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Goa Campus, as an “Examiner of Electronic Evidence” under Section 79A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, giving the facility official authority to examine digital evidence for judicial proceedings.
With the notification, electronic evidence processed by the laboratory will carry the highest evidentiary value and legal admissibility in Indian courts under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
The recognition covers two specialised forensic disciplines—Computer (Media) Forensics and Mobile Device Forensics—making the Goa facility only the second laboratory within the NFSU network to receive this distinction.
NFSU Goa has now joined a select group of just 21 notified digital forensic laboratories across the country authorised to function under the stringent legal framework governing electronic evidence.
The accreditation also strengthens digital forensic capabilities in Western India, where such high-level facilities are limited. Of the 21 recognised laboratories nationwide, only four are located in the western region, making the Goa facility an important addition to the region’s cybercrime investigation and judicial support infrastructure.
The certification recognises the laboratory’s advanced technical expertise, modern forensic infrastructure, quality management systems, certified protocols, and specialised licensed tools for the secure extraction, preservation, and analysis of digital evidence.
The notification is also expected to enhance NFSU Goa’s academic, research, and consultancy activities by expanding opportunities for forensic training, cybercrime investigations, and collaborative research in digital forensics.
