PANAJI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for 50 additional MBBS seats at Goa Medical College (GMC), increasing the institution’s annual intake from 200 to 250 students beginning with the 2026-27 academic session.
The approval is the latest step in GMC’s phased expansion. The college’s intake was previously raised from 180 to 200 seats for the 2024-25 academic year, following which the Goa government submitted a proposal seeking a further increase. The Commission has now cleared that proposal.
Welcoming the development, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said the additional seats would benefit aspiring medical students, particularly those from Goa, by creating more opportunities to pursue medical education within the state. He added that the move would also help strengthen Goa’s healthcare system by producing a larger pool of trained doctors in the coming years.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane termed the approval a significant achievement for the state, stating that the enhanced intake reflects continued efforts to expand medical education infrastructure. He said the increase would not only improve access to MBBS education but also contribute to meeting the state’s future healthcare needs.
With the latest approval, Goa Medical College will admit 250 MBBS students annually from the 2026-27 academic year, marking another milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen medical education and healthcare capacity.
