New Delhi: M. K. Stalin has addressed his party’s defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, stating that setbacks are part of a long political journey. His remarks came a day after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam suffered a major loss to Vijay’s party, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
Stalin, who has led the government since 2021, also experienced a personal setback by losing his long-held Kolathur constituency to V. S. Babu. This marks his first electoral defeat in over three decades, ending a long record of consistent victories since he first entered the विधानसभा in 1989.
In his response, Stalin reflected on the party’s history, noting that the DMK has governed the state multiple times and has seen both success and defeat over the years. He emphasised that while electoral outcomes may vary, the party’s core principles must remain intact. According to him, the true test for party members lies in continuing their ideological path regardless of victory or loss.
The veteran leader also underlined the importance of resilience in public life. He stated that political journeys are defined not just by wins, but by the commitment to values and the ability to move forward despite challenges. His message appeared aimed at reassuring party workers and supporters following the unexpected result.
At 73, Stalin remains one of Tamil Nadu’s most experienced politicians, having served as a legislator for seven terms. Over the years, he secured victories from constituencies such as Thousand Lights and Kolathur, building a strong political base.
The election outcome signals a new phase in Tamil Nadu politics, with emerging forces reshaping the electoral landscape. Despite the setback, Stalin’s response highlights a focus on continuity, discipline, and adherence to the party’s long-standing ideology as it prepares for the road ahead.
