PANAJI: Labour and Employment Minister Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate, informed the state legislative assembly on Wednesday that only four businesses have benefited from the employment subsidy program established by the industrial policy for hiring young Goans.
In response to a call for attention on unemployment made by Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, Monserrate stated that Rs 53.88 lakh in subsidies had been disbursed thus far.
The industrial policy’s employment subsidy program was made public by the state government. According to Monserrate, the scheme is applicable to micro, small, medium, and large manufacturing units as well as hinterland eco-tourism projects in less developed talukas that employ at least 60% Goans and give them a minimum salary of Rs 8,000 per month.
Benefits include reimbursement of 25% of salaries paid to Goan employees in large units, in accordance with the proportion specified in the scheme, and reimbursement of 50% of salaries paid to Goan-eligible youth.
According to Monserrate, “only four companies have benefited from this scheme.”
Additionally, he stated that in order to impose a more strict system for guaranteeing company compliance, the department is investigating the possibility of introducing a state amendment to the Employment Exchanges (Compulsory Notification of Vacancies) Act, 1959.
According to Viegas, the state’s unemployment rate is a major problem. Annually, students graduate from educational institutions without employment.
The state’s jobless rate is steadily increasing. The MLA added that government job fairs are what’s lacking in this situation.
“Let’s get all the departments together and conduct a fair so that everything is done transparently. “What is the plan to reduce the unemployment rate in 2025? We would like to see it reduced,” Viegas stated.
According to the MLA, the government must ensure that there is a respectable job with a healthy salary if it is unable to offer “har ghar government naukri.”
