MALA: Stating that delayed rains has brought to the fore dire need to set up and maintain water storage facilities, CM Pramod Sawant warned that henceforth opposition to building of bandharas which help in storing water will not be tolerated.
Claiming that bandhara at Curti could not be completed due to opposition by locals, Sawant said that along with Curti work of four more bandharas will be taken up by the govt.
CM Sawant was speaking at the launch of flood water pumping system at Mala.
Rs 15 crore worth ‘Flood Water Pumping Station’ was launched under Smart City Mission at Mala Panaji today by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
The system inaugurated today comprises of flood water pumping station with 5 pumps which will pump water from Mala lake to the creek to maintain the water level and prevent flooding.
All rain water drainages are connected to Mala Lake under the project. Also an automatic gate has been put to control entry of water during high tide.
For past several years, locals in this area have been suffering during the rains due to flooding, with water entering their houses.
It remains to be seen if the new system would be effective enough to mitigate these problems
