VASCO: The long-awaited rejuvenation of Orulem Lake commenced with Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar launching the desilting works under the Water Resources Department (WRD), while unveiling plans to restore and beautify the lake into a major public recreational space.
The project includes comprehensive desilting to improve the lake’s water-holding capacity and water quality, restoration of the water body, landscaping, development of walking tracks and other beautification works.
Speaking at the launch, Salkar described water bodies as the “lungs of a city” and said they play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, recharging groundwater and supporting biodiversity. He stressed that protecting such natural assets is essential for sustainable urban development and future generations.
According to Salkar, the desilting exercise will remove accumulated silt and waste, increasing the lake’s storage capacity while improving its overall condition. Once completed, landscaped green spaces and a dedicated walking track will provide residents with a safe and pleasant venue for morning and evening walks.
He said the project has been designed not only to restore the environment but also to create a clean and accessible community space for families, senior citizens and children. He expressed confidence that the restored Orulem Lake would emerge as one of Vasco’s prominent public attractions.
Residents welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the long-neglected lake would regain its former glory. Officials of the Water Resources Department, local leaders and residents attended the launch, with desilting work commencing immediately after the programme. The project is expected to significantly improve the lake’s ecological health while enhancing the quality of life in the surrounding area.
