CALANGUTE: In the early hours of the morning, a group of tourists from Mumbai found themselves at the centre of a violent altercation at the Planet Goa shack in Calangute, resulting in one tourist being seriously injured.
The incident, which occurred at 3 am, has led to the arrest of five individuals, including a local panchayat member.
According to police reports, the confrontation began over a minor issue when the shack staff refused to serve the tourists after closing time.
The group, which had been enjoying their evening, was met with hostility from the shack staff, leading to a physical brawl.
SP North Goa Akshat Kaushal confirmed that the arrested individuals include guards and waiters from Himachal and Kerala.
“The Mumbai tourist who was injured has been discharged from the hospital,” Kaushal stated. “The assault happened due to a petty issue when the shack was closed,” Kaushal added that the police are currently investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.
This incident marks the second such incident in Calangute involving tourists in a short span of time, raising concerns about safety and hospitality in the area. The police have filed a case against the shack owner, who is also a local panchayat member and are continuing their investigation.
Last week a Andhra Pradesh tourist was killed after an argument between tourists and shack operators at Calangute.
Shack workers assaulted the group of visitors, leaving a 28-year-old holidayer dead. Shack owner Agnelo Silveira, 64, his son Schubert, 23, and two shack workers, Anil Bista and Kamal Sunar, both from Nepal, were arrested.
