New Delhi: India and Bangladesh are expected to discuss the possible restoration of cross-border passenger train services that have remained suspended since 2024, with railway officials from both countries scheduled to meet in Dhaka this week.
The two sides will hold a two day Inter-Governmental Railway Meeting beginning Tuesday, where the revival of the Maitree, Bandhan and Mitali Express services is likely to be among the key issues on the agenda.
The Maitree Express connects Dhaka with Kolkata, while the Bandhan Express links Khulna with Kolkata. The Mitali Express previously operated between Dhaka and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
Bangladesh is also expected to propose a new passenger service connecting Rajshahi with Kolkata. Another proposal could involve changing the Maitree Express route to use the newly constructed Padma Bridge instead of its existing alignment through the Jamuna Bridge.
Officials on both sides are understood to be open to restoring passenger connectivity. However, restarting the services would require approvals from several departments, including foreign affairs and home ministries in the two countries. Representatives from these ministries are expected to take part in the discussions.
The passenger trains were disrupted following widespread unrest in Bangladesh in July 2024. Maitree and Bandhan Express services were initially cancelled for a limited period before their suspension was extended indefinitely. The Mitali Express made its last journey to Dhaka on July 17, 2024, without operating its scheduled return service.
The suspension coincided with a major political transition in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5, 2024, following weeks of protests, after which an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus took charge.
Relations between India and Bangladesh subsequently became strained, with Hasina’s presence in India and Dhaka’s demand for her extradition emerging as major points of contention.
Freight rail connectivity, however, has already resumed, with goods train operations restored in February 2025 after a prolonged suspension.
The upcoming railway meeting could therefore provide a significant opportunity to revive passenger connectivity and explore new rail links between the neighbouring countries.
