PANAJI: Drinking Water Minister Subhash Phal Dessai on Monday visited the ongoing expansion site of the 100 MLD Selaulim Water Treatment Plant to assess the progress of infrastructure works aimed at improving Goa’s water supply network.
During the inspection, the minister reviewed the installation of a modern trilateral block underdrain system that forms part of the upgraded filtration mechanism being introduced at the facility. Senior officials of the Water Resources Department, engineers, and technical experts accompanied him during the visit.
Officials informed the minister that the project includes mono-media filter bed units intended to improve filtration quality and increase the efficiency of treated water production.
Engineers explained that the filtration setup consists of specialised filter media and an underdrain arrangement, with the newly adopted trilateral block technology currently being installed at the plant.
According to department officials, the technology, developed by Xylem-Leopold from the United Kingdom, is being implemented in India for the first time. The work is being executed by M/s Laxmi Civil Engineering Services Pvt Ltd, Kolhapur, with technical support from international specialists.
Authorities said the upgraded system is designed to support efficient air-and-water backwashing, helping reduce maintenance time while enhancing filtration performance. The underdrain structure is made using virgin HDPE material and is expected to remain durable for more than four decades.
Phal Dessai instructed officials to maintain quality standards and ensure that the expansion project is completed within the scheduled timeframe, stressing the importance of strengthening dependable drinking water infrastructure in the State.
WRD engineers briefed the minister on the current status of the work and stated that the project is progressing as planned.
