MARGAO: Marking Goa Statehood Day and the 60th anniversary of the historic Opinion Poll (Janmat Kaul), youth leader Prabhav Naik paid tribute to several personalities whose contributions helped preserve Goa’s unique identity, culture and heritage.
During a felicitation programme organised as part of the celebrations, Naik honoured the legacy of Dr. Jack de Sequeira, regarded as the architect of the Opinion Poll movement. A memento was presented to his daughter, Bai Manuela Maria de Sequeira, in recognition of his leadership in safeguarding Goa’s distinct identity during a crucial chapter in the State’s history.
The contribution of Bab Shabudad Dessai was also remembered. His son, Vishal Dessai, received a memento acknowledging the impact of the iconic Jyot Yatra, which became a symbol of public mobilisation and awareness during the Opinion Poll campaign.
Naik also paid homage to Bab Ulhas Buyao, popularly known as Goem Shaahir. A memento was presented to his wife, Bai Neela Buyao, recognising his role in inspiring the Janmat Kaul movement through music and cultural expression.
The programme further commemorated the birth centenary year of internationally renowned cartoonist Mario Miranda. His sister, Bai Fatima Miranda Figueiredo, was honoured on behalf of the family for his lasting contribution to art, culture and the global promotion of Goa through his celebrated illustrations.
