VASCO: Growing concerns over the increasing presence of beggars in Vasco have prompted residents, traders and visitors to call for immediate intervention by authorities to reclaim public spaces and improve the town’s overall environment.
Residents claim that several key locations across Vasco, including market areas, bus stops, footpaths and public seating zones, have witnessed a noticeable rise in the number of beggars in recent months. According to locals, many regularly approach pedestrians and shoppers for money, creating inconvenience in busy public areas.
Particular concern has been expressed over the alleged misuse of facilities developed under the Vasco beautification project. Citizens say benches, walkways and other public amenities meant for residents and visitors are frequently occupied, limiting their intended use. Complaints have also been raised about littering and unhygienic conditions in some areas, which residents believe are affecting the town’s appearance.
Locals further allege that certain public spaces have become gathering points for nuisance activities, including the consumption of alcohol, especially during evening hours. They argue that such incidents discourage families and tourists from using these areas and tarnish Vasco’s image as a gateway town.
Residents pointed out that Vasco’s status as Goa’s principal railway hub brings a constant influx of travellers from across the country. Some believe that a section of these arrivals eventually take shelter in public spaces, contributing to the growing visibility of beggars in the town.
Concerns have also been raised about visitor safety. While residents have not directly linked reported theft cases involving tourists to beggars, they maintain that better monitoring and regulation of public spaces would help improve security and public confidence.
Citizens have appealed to the Mormugao Municipal Council, Vasco Police and other concerned departments to work together in addressing the issue. They have called for regular inspections, stricter enforcement against public nuisance and rehabilitation measures for those in need, stressing that timely action is necessary to preserve cleanliness, safety and the overall image of Vasco.
