SANCOALE: Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai, along with the residents, conducted an inspection of the Marman Shipyard on Thursday morning over an alleged dredging activity.
During the inspection of Marman Shipyard over, Sarpanch Panchayat instructed the Shipyard in charge to stop the ongoing work and reverse the damage done at the Sancoale bay area.
After issuing a stop-work order to the Marman Shipyard on Wednesday, Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai conducted a site inspection of the Marman Shipyard on Thursday morning and the panch member and residents.
Later, Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai said that after conducting an inspection at Marman Shipyard, instruction had been given to the Shipyard manager to stop the ongoing work immediately and reverse the damage done by the desilting activity at the Sancoale bay area. This is being asked to avoid any danger to the lives of the local fishermen who come to collect clams etc.
He further said that he has asked the shipyard representative to refill the silt, which has been dredged, and once the damage reversal is done, he will also help the Shipyard in ten years long pending ship launch.
Panch Succorin Vales said that the locals and the panchayat were not taken into confidence about this dredging activity.
“I am with the locals, and we don’t want our local people to suffer,” panch said
Narayan Naik, a social activist, also condemned the dredging work in the Sancoale bay and added that this dredging might cause danger to the fishermen whose lives are dependent on fishing activities.
He also questioned how could a shipyard start such work without taking people into consideration.
Meanwhile, Satyajeet Jagptap, the Shipyard representative, said that the Shipyard has obtained permission from the GCZMA and has applied for permission from the MPA.
He further said that the Sarpanch has asked to stop the ongoing work and refill the silt in the Sancoale bay. We had done the desilting since we wanted to launch the vessel, which has been pending for the last ten years.
