VASCO: The shifting of fish vendors from the old fish market shed to a new temporary shed near the vegetable market started on Wednesday in the presence of a police force. Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar assured the vendors of building a new fish market complex within 18 months.
On Wednesday morning, the Mormugao municipality, along with the Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, city Councillor Shami Salkar, councillor Girish Borkar, Deepak Naik and Vasco police inspector Kapil Nayak, the shifting of fish vendors from the old fish market to the newly built temporary shed at Dev Damodar Trust space commenced.
The contractor instructed the labourers to dismantle the asbestos sheets of the old market shed. The dismantling was commenced from the rear side of the shed since the fish vendors requested to clear the open area of the shed on Wednesday and were assured to shift fully on Thursday.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that the shifting of fish vendors from the old market to the new place was a herculean task that many former politicians tried but failed.
He further said that having a new market complex project with better facilities would benefit the local fish vendors, and he assured that within 18 months, they would try to build the new fish market project.
Salkar said that on Wednesday, partial shifting has been started with the dismantling of sheets and the entire old fish market structure will be bulldozed on Thursday, and the fish vendors will be shifted into the new shed. He thanked the fish vendors, leaders and the council for their constant support of him.
City Councillor Shami Salkar stated that the shifting process has started today, and vendors will be shifted completely on Thursday, and the work of demolition of the old shed will start soon.
Deepak Naik, councillor, said that it is a milestone achievement of Vasco MLA Salkar to initiate the shifting of the fish vendors, which was not happening for the last 15 years.
Naik further said that only Salkar made it possible to resolve several issues of the fish vendors and convince them to shift.
MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar said that better facilities will be provided in the new temporary shed where the fish vendors will be shifted.
Meanwhile, the fish vendors from the Vasco fish market said that the dialogue between then Salkar and the fish vendors helped clear several doubts and agree to our demands.
“We want that the new fish market should be built within the given time and we should be re-shifted to a new market,” they said.
