PORVORIM: The Save Old Goa Action Committee members today demanded that the Heritage Master Plan with the demarcation of the buffer zone of national and state monuments be announced before the Exposition of ‘Goencho Saib’.
The resentful villagers expressed their resistance to new real estate-driven construction projects.
Speaking with reporters, they brought up the fact that Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage scene, is the scene of illegal activity.
The committee coordinator, Peter Viegas, questioned why unlawful activities were permitted in spite of the government’s claims that it was attempting to preserve Goa. There will be an exhibition and feasts thereafter. However, the administration is adamant about destroying everything. We’ll bring the matter before all Goans if the masterplan is not completed correctly.”
Vincent D’Silva stated, “We are here to raise our concerns with the head of the State about the illegal activities taking place in Old Goa.”
Additionally, D’Silva cited a number of government-approved development projects that he felt were detrimental to the neighbourhood. He insisted that action is required and requested Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to launch an investigation and halt these trends.
“The CM is in charge of the cabinet and holds all ministers accountable for their conduct. D’Silva continued, “He needs to take this seriously and not act as though he doesn’t know what is going on,” they said.
Another committee member questioned why the illegalities persisted even after the government established a powerful committee.
He stated that the protection of the heritage property requires a master plan, noting that illicit activities have been taking place in the area for the past year.
SOGAC also launched a petition against illegal land conversions at the heritage site, accusing the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department of purposefully allowing builders permission for conversions in the protected area. They are requesting support from the people of Goa in their campaign.
“The residents of Old Goa have come together to tell the people of the State that illegalities are happening in our area. We request the people of the State to participate in the signature campaign and try to protect Goa.” the villagers said.
