MARGAO: A meeting of the District Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee for South Goa under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, was held to review the implementation of the Act and monitor the status of cases in the district.
The meeting was chaired by Egna Cleetus and attended by South Goa Member of Parliament Viriato Fernandes, Superintendent of Police Santosh Desai, and officials from the Social Welfare Department.
During the meeting, officials stressed that all pending cases registered under the Prevention of Atrocities Act must be disposed of strictly as per prescribed legal procedures and within the stipulated time frame.
The Superintendent of Police informed the committee that no cases under the Act have been reported in South Goa during the current year. He further stated that only two cases were registered in the previous year and that charge sheets in both matters have already been filed.
Officials also informed the committee that the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has been conducting awareness programmes related to the Act, while compensation has been provided to victims in eligible cases.
The chairperson directed all departments and concerned authorities to ensure strict adherence to the provisions and guidelines laid down under the Act to safeguard the rights of vulnerable communities.
