New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long been regarded as a platform that discovers and nurtures cricketing talent. Over the years, the tournament has played a major role in shaping the careers of stars such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Rinku Singh and young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, not every player who earns a lucrative IPL contract manages to justify the investment.
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has criticized IPL franchises for repeatedly spending large sums on players who fail to deliver at the highest level. In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar pointed to flaws in scouting systems and questioned the judgment of talent evaluators who rely heavily on performances in local leagues.
According to Gavaskar, several powerful hitters who dominate state and city-level tournaments struggle when faced with the quality of bowling seen in the IPL. He noted that the standard of cricket in many domestic T20 leagues is significantly lower than in the IPL, making it difficult to accurately assess a player’s true ability.
The former India captain suggested that scouts and franchise advisers often get influenced by hype or player agents rather than making objective assessments. As a result, teams end up investing crores in players who rarely feature in matches or fail to make an impact when given opportunities.
Without naming specific individuals, Gavaskar said there are numerous examples of players who continue to secure IPL contracts based on a single standout performance. He argued that one impressive innings or spell, particularly in a low-pressure match, should not guarantee repeated selections season after season.
Gavaskar concluded that franchises must develop a more discerning approach to talent identification. Otherwise, teams risk wasting valuable resources on players who prove to be overrated and overvalued once exposed to the intense competition of the IPL.
