CANACONA: The Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has ordered the immediate evacuation and demolition of the dilapidated Prabhu Building at Chaudi, citing an engineering report that declared the structure critically unsafe and at risk of sudden collapse.
In a notice issued under Section 190 of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968, CMC Chief Officer Laxmikant R. Dessai directed the owner, Damodar Narayan Prabhu, to immediately stop all commercial activities, vacate the premises and demolish the structure within 15 days. The notice, dated June 25, 2026, warns that failure to comply will result in the premises being sealed and the building demolished by the authorities without further notice.
The building, located in the heart of Chaudi’s commercial area, houses a doctor’s clinic and several commercial establishments. According to the notice, a structural audit conducted by the Goa Engineering College (GEC) found that the building has undergone irreversible deterioration and is critically unsafe, posing a high risk of sudden collapse without prior warning.
The GEC report further noted that the structure is situated in a busy public area, making it a serious threat to public safety and nearby property.
The action follows an urgent complaint submitted on June 23 by Shankar Naik to the Deputy Collector of Canacona, highlighting the dangerous condition of the building. In his complaint, Naik claimed that nearly 90 per cent of the structure had already collapsed and the remaining portion was on the verge of giving way, urging authorities to act immediately to prevent a potential disaster.
Following the complaint, the Deputy Collector reportedly directed the Canacona Municipal Council to take immediate action in the interest of public safety.
