MARGAO: Marian Rodrigues, the Convenor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Goa, has strongly denounced the recent statement made by Subhash Velingkar, in which he called for a DNA test on the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa. In a powerful statement, Rodrigues emphasized the secular fabric of Goa and the peaceful coexistence that has long defined the state.
“We are a secular, peaceful state with communal harmony where people of every religion coexist peacefully,” said Rodrigues. “As the convenor of TMC, I condemn the statement made by Subhash Velingkar demanding a DNA test of St. Francis Xavier. He should check his parents’ DNA instead of using religion to disturb peace in the state.”
Rodrigues went on to highlight that many Hindus in Goa revere St. Francis Xavier, and such comments are both unnecessary and divisive. He stressed that people of all faiths in Goa are united, but a select few, like Velingkar, seem intent on disturbing the peace for personal or political gain.
“These individuals are attempting to turn our peaceful state into places like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where communal riots are more common. I urge Goans to ignore such people and their foolish statements to preserve the peace and prevent communal tensions,” he added.
Rodrigues further appealed to the people of Goa to remain steadfast in their commitment to unity and not allow political players to exploit religious sentiments for their own agenda. “I also want to tell people like Velingkar that they must not use religion for their political gains and disturb the peace of the state,” he concluded.
Goa, a state known for its harmonious coexistence of different communities, now faces a call to defend its secular values in the wake of such inflammatory remarks. The TMC convenor’s strong rebuke is expected to resonate with many Goans who cherish peace and unity.
