PANAJI: The Torch Rally of the 37th National Games in Goa completed its last leg of the statewide tour in Tiswadi taluka on Sunday.
The Rally made halts at Panaji Corporation Area, Ribandar, Old Goa, Khorlim, Karmali, Neura, Pilar, Agassaim, Goa Velha, Batim, Siridao, Bambolim, Dona Paula, Caranzalem, St. Cruz, and Taleigao. Cumbharjua MLA Shri Rajesh Faldessai welcomed the Rally along with members of local panchayats, and other government officials in his constituency.
“It is a privilege to welcome the Torch Rally in Tiswadi and Cumbarjua Constituency for the 37th National Games. Goans are thrilled to witness such a unique sporting spectacle in the state. Such a an event of this magnitude will certainly benefit the sporting culture and inspire Goan sportspersons to bring laurels for the state in future. I request Goans to attend the event in large numbers,” said Faldessai.
Union Minister of State for Tourism and Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Shripad Naik, St. Cruz MLA Shri Rudolf Fernandes, and Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji Shri Rohit Monserrate welcomed the Torch Rally on behalf of their respective constituencies in their areas.
Naik said that sport is important for every person in society. “There is awareness about the National Games. After a long wait, Goa has got the opportunity to host the Games.The state government has completed adequate preparations for the event.
The Prime Minister is coming on 26 October to inaugurate the Games. I am very thankful to the Government of India and the Union Sports Ministry that despite being a small state, Goa has been given the opportunity like any other state to host the Games,” he said.
“If the sportsmanship spirit has to increase then the popularity of sports has to increase. The society as a whole, including young and the old, have to be involved with sports. People have talent and they should utilise it. Sports is not only meant for young and the youth, rather it is meant for everyone. Through sports, one can contribute to society. We learn virtues like discipline through sports. It is a form of exercise for our bodies. Sport is needed to live a good life. Keeping this importance in mind, the state government has hosted the National Games. Public support is needed to make it a success,” added Shripad. Students of various schools were also present.
