CANACONA: Torrential rain accompanied by strong winds brought down a large eucalyptus tree on NH-66 (Old Highway) near Partagal Math on Sunday, disrupting traffic for over half an hour after the tree crashed onto the roadway and pulled down electricity lines.
The incident occurred a few metres from the entrance to the famous Partagal Math, temporarily blocking both lanes of the highway. Buses, private vehicles and pilgrims travelling to the Math, where a towering statue of Lord Ram was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were left stranded as traffic came to a complete halt.
The fallen tree also brought down roadside electrical cables, creating a potentially dangerous situation for commuters. Adding to the risk, another large eucalyptus tree was left hanging precariously on a neighbouring tree. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported, although a few motorists attempted to manoeuvre around the obstruction.
After waiting for some time for Fire and Emergency Services personnel to arrive, local residents and stranded motorists joined hands to remove the fallen tree, restoring the flow of traffic.
Officials from the Electricity Department and Fire and Emergency Services later reached the site to inspect the damaged power lines and ensure the area was safe for the public.
Heavy rain and strong winds also led to several other incidents of fallen trees across Canacona, with trees reported on roads, pathways and structures. However, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution during the monsoon season, as intense rainfall and gusty winds can result in falling trees, damaged power lines and slippery road conditions.
