MAPUSA: Mapusa police have registered a case against two persons for allegedly attacking Moira Panch member Lavu Thakur on Wednesday afternoon following a dispute reportedly linked to past animosity.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 12.40 pm when Thakur was travelling home from Mapusa on his scooter. Near Belekar Hall in Bastora, Chirag Belekar of Moira allegedly followed Thakur on a motorcycle and rammed into his two-wheeler from behind, causing him to fall onto the road.
An argument reportedly broke out immediately after the collision. Police said Chirag later contacted his father, Jayesh Belekar, who arrived at the spot soon after.
The duo is accused of physically assaulting Thakur and allegedly issuing threats during the confrontation.
Following the incident, Thakur was taken to the Aldona Primary Health Centre for initial medical treatment and was later shifted to the Mapusa District Hospital for further care.
Based on Thakur’s complaint, Mapusa police registered an offence against Jayesh and Chirag Belekar. Police teams are currently searching for the accused persons.
Soon after learning about the incident, Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira visited Thakur at the district hospital and enquired about his condition. Ferreira also criticised the attack on an elected panchayat representative.
The investigation is being handled by Assistant Sub-Inspector Ajay Gaonkar under the supervision of Police Inspector Naveen Desai.
