VASCO: In a move to address the long-standing sanitation issues in Vasco, MLA Krishna Salkar launched a significant project to install new sewer lines and construct sewage pumping stations in the Mestawada/Bhutebhat area on Tuesday.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance sanitation infrastructure, a concern that has plagued the region for over 25 years.
The project aims to provide comprehensive sewer connections to all households, thereby eliminating the health risks associated with open sewer discharge. According to MLA Salkar, the existing sewerage pipelines, laid 25 years ago, lacked the necessary pumping stations, highlighting a critical gap in previous planning. “We are now rectifying this oversight by building two sewage pumping stations and laying new sewer lines, along with auxiliary works such as road reinstatement,” Salkar explained.
Vasco has historically struggled with inadequate sewage connectivity, but Salkar’s plan includes the construction of five pumping stations to address this issue. “In addition to the two pumping stations in this area, we are also building one in Maimolem with the support of Mormugao Communidade. We have secured land from a family at one location and the Dempo family has assured us land at Kharewado for another pumping station. Once these five pumping stations are operational, 70% of Vasco’s sewage connectivity will be achieved,” he detailed.
Salkar emphasized the environmental and health risks posed by open sewage discharge into drains and water bodies like Maimolem Lake. He projected that within the next two years, 70 to 80% of the sewage network will be completed and is currently identifying land for a sewage pumping station at New Vaddem to achieve 100% connectivity.
The project has received a sanction of ₹70 lakh, and Salkar expressed his gratitude to the Ashish Borker family for voluntarily providing land and acknowledged the support of Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. “Vasco constituency is currently undertaking development projects worth ₹300 to ₹400 crore,” he noted.
This new sewerage infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance sanitation in Vasco, benefiting residents and contributing to better public health and environmental conditions.
