London: In a significant moment for cultural exchange and recognition, an event at Westminster Palace recently highlighted the profound contributions of the Goan community to British society. On the occasion of this event, titled ‘Recognition of the UK Goan Diaspora’, over 60 Goans from across the UK came together to celebrate their achievements. This milestone gathering not only underscored the diversity and richness that the Goan diaspora brings to the UK but also marked a new chapter in the community’s relations with British society.
The event, held at the historic Westminster Palace, was organized by Swindon Labour MPs Heidi Alexander and Will Stone, along with the first Goan mayor of Swindon, Imtiaz Shaikh, and his wife, Councillor Adorabelle Shaikh. It recognized Goans who have made substantial contributions to various fields, including the armed forces, medical services, engineering, law enforcement, business, corporate sectors, and hospitality. Many participants hailed from areas like Swindon, Wembley, Southall, Hayes, and other parts of London.
Councillor Adorabelle Shaikh noted that this event marked a historic moment, emphasizing the role of Goans in enriching the UK’s multicultural landscape. “Goans have made the UK their home and continue to make vital contributions to the UK’s diverse background,” she stated. MP Heidi Alexander also commended the Goan diaspora, highlighting their invaluable role in the UK’s economic and cultural life.
The event also featured a memorable performance by Goan artists Tommy Afonso (Jr. Nelson) and Andre Pedro D’Souza (Bab Andrew), who sang a Konkani song at the UK House of Commons. This performance resonated deeply with the Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan, which saw it as a milestone in promoting Konkani language and culture globally. The song captured the experiences of Goans who migrate to the UK in search of opportunities and underscored the importance of unity among the diaspora.
