BICHOLIM: An anti-incumbency wave against the BJP seem to be taking root in Mayem constituency, with many claiming their stake for the BJP ticket in the upcoming elections.
The Mayem constituency has been a stronghold of the BJP for a long, and it is believed that any candidate will win the elections from the constituency if given a BJP ticket. There has always been a demand for a local candidate in the constituency, and even during this
elections, this demand has cropped up.
“We want a local candidate, and if Mayem MLA, Pravin Zantye, is given a ticket, we would strongly oppose the move”, Mayem Bhoo Vimochan Nagrik Kruti Samiti secretary, Sakharam Pednekar told.
He came down heavily on the MLA for failing to resolve the custodian issue of Mayem during his tenure.
“It was the responsibility of the MLA to resolve the issue. Only a few sanads are given to the people while many are still left. If Zantye is given the BJP ticket, we would have to vote against the party,” Pednekar told.
Following suit, the Gomantak Bhandari Samaj from Bicholim has also demanded a ticket to one Rupesh Thanekar, a local candidate. “For all these years, we have worked from BJP, and this time we want a local Bhandari candidate; else, we would have to decide upon our strategy.” Bicholim Bhandari samaj president, Anand Narvekar told.
“There are about 16000 Bhandari voters in the Mayem constituency, and if we decide to unite, we can change the political calculations in the constituency. We want to ask as to why we are not given representation when we are in the majority,” Narvekar asked.
