OLD GOA: Supporting all heritage conservationists, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao today warned the government authorities not to indulge in any illegeal acts.
“We have not only gathered in a holy pricint, but in a world renowned heritage area recognized as such by our Central Government, by the Archaeological Survey of India and UNESCO. We should know that any undue or offensive offenders even by legitimate stakeholders can attract the de-recognition of the world heritage site,” said Archbishop Ferrao
He further said that the Church is behind all the heritage conservationists across all religions and warned the government authorities not to indulge in any illegal acts.
“We must retain the sanctity of the Church and heritage. I strongly appeal to all those in authoirty to refrain from any acts and decsions whihc are illegal and detrimental to preservation of heritage at Old Goa,” he added
Goa Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Town and Country Planning (TCP) Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar on Tuesday had withdrawn permissions given to an allegedly illegal structure at Old Goa.
Various protests were held by political parties and NGOs against the allegedly illegal structure of a bungalow in a heritage precinct at Old Goa.
Recently, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had announced that the government would act as per the law against the structure.
The construction of a bungalow has been undertaken by a fashion designer who is a BJP functionary in Mumbai. Agitated over the State government’s inaction against the construction of a bungalow in the heritage precinct of Old Goa, the citizens from all parts of Goa and from all ages are currently on hunger strike.
Old Goa has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India. The church in Old Goa is an architectural masterpiece and attracts a large number of tourist.
