Benaulim: In a heart-stopping and intensely competitive match at the Dando Ground, the second semifinal of the 1st All Goa UK Goans Dynamic Group Tournament witnessed Benaulim Veterans securing a hard-fought victory over Vasco Veterans. The match, which ended in a goalless draw after regular time, was decided in a tense penalty shootout where Benaulim emerged triumphant with a 4-3 score.
The game began at a brisk pace, with both teams displaying a cautious approach in the first half. Each side was wary of conceding the opening goal, leading to a defensive-minded first 45 minutes. Despite the fast start, neither Benaulim Veterans nor Vasco Veterans could break the deadlock, and the first half concluded with the scoreline still at 0-0.
The second half saw Vasco Veterans return with renewed vigor, driven by the dynamic duo of Sheikh Niazi and Nelson Landez. These players pushed hard to create scoring opportunities, but Benaulim’s midfield, anchored by Santan Furtado and Mingu, proved equally resilient. The Benaulim defense, marshaled by Yuri Ferrao, Babu, and Charlie, stood firm against every Vasco attack, thwarting their opponents’ efforts to score.
As the match neared its climax, Vasco launched a furious assault in the last 10 minutes, but Benaulim’s defense remained unyielding. Goalkeeper Manoj Kesarkar was instrumental in this period, producing a series of crucial saves that denied Vasco any chance of scoring. With neither team able to find the back of the net in regular time, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Benaulim Veterans’ goalkeeper Manoj Kesarkar emerged as the hero. He saved three of Vasco’s penalties, a performance that ultimately decided the outcome of the match. Benaulim Veterans converted their penalties with precision, securing a 4-3 victory in the shootout.
This win propels Benaulim Veterans into the final of the tournament, where they will face Calangute Veterans on January 2, 2025. The upcoming final promises to be an exciting encounter, given the form and determination displayed by both teams in the semifinals.
