VASCO: A tragic discovery was made on Wednesday when the body of a missing man, identified as Durga Naik (49), was found floating in the Zuari River near Rua de Maria, Sancoale. The deceased, a resident of Varnapuri, Mangoor Hill, Vasco, had been reported missing since 23rd September 2024.
The discovery was made following a phone call from local resident Peter Dsouza, who alerted the Verna Police Station after spotting the body in the river. A police team reached the site and fished out the body.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that deceased Naik had been missing from Vasco on Monday and his scooter had been found abandoned on the Zuari Bridge, leading the family members to suspect that he may have committed suicide by jumping into the river.
An enquiry was conducted, and a scene of UD (Unnatural Death) occurrence and inquest panchnama were completed. The body has been preserved at S. G. District Hospital, Margao, for further medico-legal formalities.
Verna police have registered a case of Unnatural death under section 194 of BNSS and PSI Rajdatt Arsekar is carrying out a further investigation under the supervision of PI Melson Colaco and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh.
