MARGAO: The dispute surrounding the confirmation of land records of the BPS Club has intensified, with the club president’s counsel filing an objection to an intervention application submitted by Shadow Council Convener Savio Coutinho.
When the matter came up for hearing before the Inspector of Survey and Land Records on Friday, counsel for BPS Club President Yogiraj Kamat, Advocate Monisha Viegas, filed an application objecting to Coutinho’s intervention plea, contending that he has no locus standi in the matter.
According to Coutinho, his request for immediate arguments on the objection was not accepted, as a copy of the objection application had only been handed over to him during the proceedings.
Reacting to the development, Coutinho said he was “shocked and surprised” that his intervention application had been opposed.
“All that we want is to understand how the 9,000-plus square metres of land was conferred on the club and what was the reason that the club had to wait for an ex-Chief Minister’s son to become the president of the BPS Club to seek confirmation of the land records,” he said.
Coutinho further stated that if all the documents are in order, “nobody can deny the club its rights to the land.”
He also argued that although the club may have more than 500 members, the issue assumes a public dimension because the Margao Municipal Council is a party to the proceedings. “The 70,000-plus population of Margao needs to know the facts about this matter,” he said.
Coutinho additionally questioned why, according to him, the club’s address was shown as the personal address of Yogiraj Kamat when the club has a functional office on its premises.
The matter is currently before the Inspector of Survey and Land Records for further proceedings.
