Vasco: Cortalim Youth Congress committee, along with the villagers of Cuelim, raised the objections of inflated water bills at the Office of the assistant engineer, S.D.I/W.D.IX(PHE) P.W.D at Baina,Vasco.
Olencio Simoes, leader of the Congress party, stated that in the name of a free water supply for each household for 16m3, the government is looting the public by applying a flat rate of Rs. 25/m3 if the units exceed 50m3, which is the average water consumption per household. That means there is a steep increase in the tariff, which is daylight robbery in the name of ‘free’ water to the consumers.
Peter Fernandes, President of Cortalim youth Congress, stated that this is a daylight robbery by the government in the name of freebies, the 16000 litres of water promised to be given free today. Now the villagers of Cortalim, who usually used to get a bill of around Rs.500 on an average, are forced to pay around Rs.8000 and more amounting bill which is completely unjust. After increasing tax on petrol and electricity, the government has plans to loot us through water bills that too during Christmas, which is really bad,” Fernandes added.
It may be recalled that twice in December this year, the aggrieved residents from Cortalim, Dabolim, Sancoale areas had confronted PWD engineers questioning him about the exorbitant water bills which they have received. Locals have expressed disappointment with the government who has promised them to give water free of cost, and on the other hand, the locals were slapped with water bills ranging in thousands of rupees which the commoners will have to pay through their nose.
