ALTHINO: According to Minister for Waste Management Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate, who stated that all the procedures needed to establish a waste treatment facility at Bainguinim in Old Goa have been finished, a new tender will be issued shortly.
Monserrate stated that the waste treatment plant would benefit the entire Tiswadi taluka and that “plant work shall begin before August 2025.”
BJP MLA from Cumbarjua Rajesh Faldessai pushed the minister to begin construction on the plant during his current term shortly after Monserrate’s declaration.
Following the Supreme Court’s approval, Monseratte informed the media that the process of releasing an updated offer for the construction of the Bainguinim trash treatment plant was finished. In addition, the minister asserted that there isn’t just one problem with the Sonsodo trash yard.
“There are residential complexes, a muth, hospital, and schools where the site for setting up the garbage treatment plant has been identified,” Faldessai stated, stating that he will not permit Monserrate to begin construction on the Bainguinim garbage treatment plant. I vehemently oppose the plant because it will be destructive to humans.
At Bainguinim, the government has suggested building an integrated solid waste management plant with a 100 TPD capacity.
The facility was intended to serve Tiswadi, Goa’s core region, as well as the nearby taluka. This was done in order to deal with the growing amount of rubbish that the talukas of Tiswadi and Ponda were producing as a result of the fast urbanization and development.
1.7 lakh square meters of land have already been notified by the departments of waste management and science and technology to be used for the project.
The project’s Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment was completed by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur, and a comprehensive project report was prepared in compliance with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
On July 28, 2019, a public hearing was held for the Bainguinim facility, and on January 6, 2020, the Goa State Environment Impact Assessment Authority issued Environmental Clearance (EC) for the project.
