MAPUSA: Teh Goa Waste Management Corporation will accept five tonnes of wet waste from Mapusa Municipal area from Monday, Waste management Minister Michael Lobo has informed.
Lobo, who was in Mapusa today, said that Mapusa generates 35-40 tonnes of wet waste every day but does not have a facility to treat wet waste.
“There are several problems which need to be sorted out, one of those is the waste management. During the pandemic, the waste generation had come down to 20 tonnes, but it is slowly increasing again,” he said.
Lobo criticised teh council for not even collecting 50 p.c of teh waste generated.
“In fact, not many municipalities and panchayats do that. No local body treats the wet waste. We have just one facility at Saligao plateau, and another one is coming up at Curchorem by December,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said, teh MMC had approached him to accept at least five tonnes of wet waste for treatment.
“We have approved the demand, and from Monday, we will accept five tonnes. In future, we can accept 10 tonnes also, but the MMC has to utilise its workers well as they are paid for work,” he said.
Lobo also said that he was ready to send an engineer from SWMC to manage waste if MMC was willing to help.
“We see dark spots everywhere, including near Dy Collectors office in Mapusa, which has to change by creating awareness amongst people,” he said.
