PANAJI: State Epidemiologist Dr. Utkarsh Betodkar reassured the public that there is no reason to panic about the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has been well-known since its discovery in 2001.
Dr. Betodkar emphasized that HMPV typically presents with mild symptoms and is more prevalent during the winter season, behaving similarly to the influenza virus or a common viral fever.
HMPV is a common respiratory virus that affects individuals of all ages, although it is more common and severe in young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.
The symptoms of HMPV can range from mild to severe and include a runny or blocked nose, cough, sore throat, fever, and shortness of breath. These symptoms often overlap with those of other illnesses such as COVID-19 or the flu, making differential diagnosis challenging without specific testing.
Despite an outbreak of HMPV in some regions, such as mainland China, Hong Kong has reported low levels of the virus.
According to David Hui, a professor of respiratory medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, enhancing hygiene measures like wearing face masks and frequent handwashing can help prevent a local outbreak.
Dr. Betodkar stressed that while HMPV can lead to serious health issues in vulnerable populations, such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, most cases are mild and self-limiting.
He advised that individuals experiencing severe or prolonged symptoms should seek medical attention promptly. For the general public, maintaining good hygiene practices and staying informed are key to managing the risk associated with HMPV.
In summary, while HMPV is a significant respiratory virus, it is not a new threat and can be managed with standard preventive measures.
The public is advised to remain vigilant but not to panic, as the virus typically causes mild symptoms. By adhering to hygiene guidelines and seeking medical care when necessary, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with HMPV.
