New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer has emerged as one of the standout performers in recent seasons, using criticism as fuel to elevate his game. Since joining Punjab Kings at the mega auction, he has not only impressed with the bat but also showcased strong leadership, guiding the side to a runners-up finish last season and maintaining an unbeaten run in the current campaign.
Iyer’s numbers reflect his consistency and aggression. He scored 604 runs last season at a striking rate above 175, and has carried that momentum forward with 279 runs in just six innings this year, striking at an even higher rate. Despite his evident talent, he had long been questioned for his struggle against short-pitched deliveries.
That criticism, however, became a turning point. Determined to overcome the perceived weakness, Iyer reshaped his approach at the crease. Instead of playing it safe, he now attacks short balls with confidence, turning a former vulnerability into a strength.
A key factor in his transformation has been his training routine and guidance from experienced mentors. Iyer continues to work closely with coach Pravin Amre, while also exchanging ideas with Abhishek Nayar. His practice sessions are intense and match-like, often involving long hours at the crease facing quality bowlers, which helps him refine his technique and decision-making.
He also focuses on rhythm and timing, drawing inspiration from elite players such as AB de Villiers, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. By improving his movement and preparation before each delivery, Iyer has developed a smoother and more controlled batting flow.
Beyond technique, his mindset has played a crucial role. Iyer remains driven by the need to challenge limitations imposed by others, especially during difficult phases such as injuries. His determination to return stronger and prove doubters wrong continues to shape his journey, making him a strong contender for a comeback in India’s T20 setup and even future leadership roles.
