VERNA: On Tuesday afternoon, a massive fire broke out at a car service centre in the Verna Industrial Estate in Goa, highlighting significant concerns over fire safety and unauthorized vehicle parking.
The incident, which could have escalated into a major disaster if it had spread to adjacent industrial units, has prompted the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to take stringent action.
Reginaldo Lourenco, the Chairman of IDC and a local MLA, visited the site following the fire and announced that the IDC will issue a notice to the servicing company for illegally parking vehicles on the road and IDC property. Lourenco emphasized that previous warnings had been issued to the company to remove these vehicles, as they were parked on roads and open spaces belonging to the IDC.
“The fire engulfed vehicles parked on the road and IDC land, which is a clear violation of our guidelines,” Lourenco stated. He instructed IDC officials to investigate the source of the fire, including the possibility of it originating from a nearby scrapyard.
Lourenco reiterated that strict action will be taken against any company found parking vehicles on roads and open spaces within the industrial estates. “We are compelled to act against all units dumping their material on the roads and open spaces,” he said.
Regarding fire safety standards, Lourenco was clear: “Any unit violating fire safety standards will face consequences. We will conduct a fire audit in the industrial estate to ensure compliance.”
