New Delhi: India captain Shreyas Iyer did not hold back after his team’s humiliating 125 run defeat to England cricket team in the second T20I at Trent Bridge, describing the performance as “atrocious” and admitting it fell well below acceptable standards.
Chasing a target of 202, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse and were bowled out for just 76 in 11.4 overs, recording their biggest defeat by runs in T20 internationals. The result eclipsed their previous worst defeat, an 80 run loss to New Zealand national cricket team in 2019, and handed England a 2-0 lead in the four match series after the opening game was washed out.
Speaking after the match, Iyer said there was no excuse for such a heavy defeat. He admitted the team failed to execute its plans while chasing and struggled to adapt to the conditions, adding that the batting performance was unacceptable and offered plenty of lessons ahead of the remaining matches.
England’s pace attack dominated from the outset, with Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue consistently bowling above 145 kmph. Tongue produced career best figures of 4 for 28, while Archer claimed three wickets as India’s top order crumbled under sustained pressure.
Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi briefly entertained by smashing a six off Archer after surviving a sharp bouncer, but India’s resistance quickly faded. Archer dismissed Iyer and Axar Patel in quick succession, leaving the visitors reeling before the middle order offered little fight.
Earlier, England built a competitive total of 201 for 7, powered by a fluent 70 from Phil Salt. Jos Buttler contributed 36, while Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 41 to push the hosts beyond the 200 mark.
Despite the heavy defeat, Iyer urged his side to move on quickly and focus on making a strong comeback in the fourth T20I at Bristol, insisting the team must learn from its mistakes rather than dwell on the disappointing performance.
